Catalyst 1-2-1 mentoring in Tavistock College

There has been a growing need for mentoring at Tavistock College. Since then we have identified a training program through MAPS (Mentoring and Peer Support) in Sutton, London. MAPS has grown an incredibly successful schools mentoring scheme over the past decade and was generous enough to train Catalyst workers. We have now appointed a number of volunteers from the local churches, who are interviewed, DBS checked and comprehensively trained and mentor a young person on a 1-2-1 basis every week, for a full school year.
Mentoring has proven to be a tremendous mechanism for supporting young people presenting any such concerns; building tangible life and academic key skills, listening to worries, discussing relevant issues, exploring problems, helping with homework or revision, and sharing life experience.
A volunteer mentor can be seen by pupils as the one person best positioned to help. The mentor is independent of both the school, local authority, family and other agencies such as social services. This independence allows the mentor to truly listen to what is being said and offer some encouragement, guidance and observations along the way.
This scheme at Tavistock College has really benefited the students that have needed some encouragement or support in any capacity that has been needed. We have had many volunteer to be mentors therefore many have had the opportunity of being mentored.
If you would like to apply for the next training slot during 2017, please contact Trudi at trudi@tavistockcatalyst.com or Geoff at geoff@tavistockcatalyst.com
